Whirlpool named in class action over falsely advertising AquaLift® Self-Cleaning Technology

Whirlpool

whirlpool_brand_bk

Whirlpool designs, manufactures, advertises, and sells a line of gas and electric stoves, ranges, and ovens featuring its proprietary “AquaLift® Self-Cleaning Technology” (“AquaLift”) a system that purportedly “self-cleans” the interior of a dirty oven in less than one hour using only water and low heat.

According to the complaint Whirlpool’s marketing and advertising for its ovens containing AquaLift is false, deceptive, and misleading to reasonable consumers because AquaLift – a key product feature – does not perform as advertised or in accordance with Whirlpool’s express and implied warranties

Contrary to Whirlpool’s marketing claims, AquaLift does not “selfclean” or otherwise perform as advertised to consumers. To be sure, the Internet is teeming with consumer complaints that target the extent of Whirlpool’s defective AquaLift technology.

I bought new Whirlpool kitchen appliances this past January. The first time I used the AquaLift cleaning cycle (last week), I discovered it doesn't work as advertised. I ran three cleaning cycles and still had to scrub the oven. What a joke! Whirlpool could not have tested this before they put it into production. And why does Whirlpool sell a cleaning kit for a self-cleaning oven?

I have purchased a Maytag gas range with sped heat burner with Aqualift Self Cleaning Technology. I have had a repairman out several times for this does not work. His response was to purchase the cleaning kit from them, however, he said that this does not really work also. Have several other issues with oven not heating, uneven cooking and oven shutting off in the middle of cooking. Had a repairman out 3 times for this.

Having the same issue. Contacted Whirlpool and was told I misunderstood what Aqualift was. They said it was not a self cleaning system but rather an assist to help clean the oven, and that it was only intended to clean the bottom of the oven. I am ready to get rid of this junk. I agree. They should be ashamed.

We bought a new house in April and the oven is a Whirlpool convection range with Aqualift Technology. I ran the "clean" cycle several times and it does not clean the oven. Contacted Whirlpool and they said to use ceramic cooktop cleaner and a scouring pad to clean the walls. That is not a self-cleaning oven!

I purchased a Whirlpool Aqualift technology. Same problem with cleaning. Does not clean anything . If I wanted to have a person cleaning oven I would have kept my previous oven which was much better at doing the job. And as a footnote.. My Thanksgiving turkey did not cook properly. Hate this oven. When calling the numbers provided all it was so you could buy products to clean. Really frustrated and recommend to all buy anything but this technology. Feeling stupid and fed up all at the same time. Home Depot passes the buck. Whirlpool wants to fix a brand new product that cannot be fixed. This is a ridiculous situation and cannot be changed no matter what I try to do. FRAUD

Same problem. After saving for 5 years, I recently remodeled my kitchen and bought a whole suite of Kitchen Aid appliances with a fancy price for what I thought was supposed be top of the line, quality brand. I'm 50 years old and after one back surgery already, on my knees scrubbing an oven like my grandmother did in the 1950s. I have only used this oven for just a little over 2 months and it has NEVER once has the aqua lift technology worked like you're led to believe. Just tonight, I ran the crazy system 5 times and scrubbed my fingers raw with a non-abrasive sponge and water. Still not clean. I am NOT a happy consumer. Any chance I can get in this lawsuit? Thanks.

I purchased the whirlpool aqualift technology cleaning gas oven in September 2016 and went to use it along with the cleaning pkg that came with the oven and did not do a thing to clean the oven. I scrubbed and scrubbed and still looks horrible. I ran the cycle 4 times. It states some condensation will form on the glass but mine does not do that. It doesn't do anything. The water doesn't even warm up. Aqualift is a joke! I miss the old school self cleaning ovens. It actual did what it said it would and made cleaning a oven so much easier. Whirlpool is suppose to be a good reputable company but after purchasing this oven, I will never buy another one of their products again. False advertising and should refund or supply all new ovens (that actual self clean) to everyone that got talked into buying this oven.

I have the same issues.
I bought a kitchen Aid range ( made by Whirlpool ) in March of 2016. I tried using the self-clean feature but it did not work. I tried it close to five times but to no avail. I have been fighting with the Whirlpool to do something about this problem but nothing. They informed me that I should have researched the product before buying it.In another instance, they sent me a cleaning kit and had the temerity to tell me that I will have to do a little scrubbing and scraping to get rid of the grease. I am too old to bend and clean; That is why I wanted a self-clean. In other words it is manual-clean disguising as self-clean. It is like going to a car dealership, buying a car without test-driving it. I get the key from the salesperson go out take possession of my car but it won't start. I complained to the salesman that the car won't start. He told me there was no engine in the car. I asked him why he sold me a car without an engine, to which he replied that I did not ask him if the car had an engine in it. Now whirlpool is telling me that I did not check out the technology before buying the product. Lame, lame, lame.

I didn't have a choice since our development (Pulte) only offers Maytag. However, 4 years ago at a different development (Pulte), I had an option for regular self-cleaning or AquaLift. Imagine my surprise when I tried this "new technology" and had to run it 3 times and still couldn't get it clean without a lot of scrubbing. Since I'm 74 with replaced knee and hip, I was unable to get down on all fours to reach the back where it seemed to be the dirtiest.

Purchased this through Shea, our builders. The oven is not "self-clean". It is "clean yourself". Shea says it's not their problem and won't do anything. Whirlpool customer service person told me we needed to use elbow grease as it will likely only clean the bottom basin - which, by the way, it doesn't. The service person would not give me the name of her manager, only would give the Corporate office address, also with no name. I live in a new Senior community is WA state. I find it hard to believe that the builders would not have researched the products they installed, especially since I noted some negative Whirlpool online comments going back years and we only purchased this in 2015. I've been trying ever since to get a replacement or a refund, to no avail. We can't personally get into the range to scrub it; it is large and deep. We paid close to $1000 for this range and while it looks beautiful, it is useless.

Yes, I had the same problem as everyone else. I made lasagna, had a spill, so decided to try the cleaning process for the first time today. It took multiple cycles, and a lot of scrubbing to get my oven clean. And, this was one spill, without using the oven again. Obviously, this technology is severely flawed, and advertising as a "self-cleaning" oven is fraudulent. I am so disappointed by this, and the fact that I spent thousands of dollars on this stove, makes me angry. I never thought to research the "self cleaning" aspect of the oven. After all, self-cleaning technology has been around for many, many years. It's logical to assume that this would work as well as my old stove, or better. I had to use a small amount of heavy duty ceramic stove top cleaner to get the remnants of the grit off, with a ton of scrubbing. The 40 minute cleaning concept is a joke. It took me 3 cycles and scrubbing...close to 3 hours. I hope we all get some restitution.

Was told by the salesman that this was the latest and greatest. It only cleaned the oven bottom after three tries. I probably could have got similar results just putting water on the oven bottom and letting it soak overnight. The sides of the oven and the door are still a mess. Unfortunately, I found out about this too late. I should have checked Consumer Reports; they also said it does not work. It should not be marketed as a self cleaning oven.

DO NOT NOT NOT purchase any Whirlpool appliances, IT IS FALSE ADVERTISING. The aqua lift does not work. I am told by the call center that I have to scrub by hand like in the old fashioned $300 ovens. Not to use any cleaners because of the appliance finish. I was offered $75 to purchase a new stove even though I paid $850 and have only had it for 1 year. Not impressed by how WHIRLPOOL stands behind their product with false advertising. They should be held accountable and offer a reasonable credit or a recall. The claims of the cleaning feature using Aqualift "Technology" is fraudulent. The rep I spoke with today even went so far as to say that it is not a self-cleaning feature. It was certainly advertised and priced as if it was a self-cleaning oven. The literature that I have in my possession and have read online as well as the actual button on my range says "self cleaning" so Whirlpool really needs to fess us and face up to the customers that purchased their products with a new technology self-cleaning feature that fails to work as described.

My brother bought my 80 year old mom this range so that she could bake all her delicious deserts with ease in a new beautiful oven. I was at her house visiting and saw that she was down on her hands and knees cleaning her "SELF CLEANING OVEN". She tried several times using the useless "AQUALIFT FEATURE" but to no avail. In this day in age with self cleaning technology WHY would Whirlpool install this unbelievable bad AQUALIFT cleaning feature?
To see my poor mother scrubbing the inside of the oven like she did back in the 50's & 60's just completely appalling!! PLUS the top surface enamel is bubbling up with rust and the oven is only 2-3 years old.
So we are trying to contact Best Buy to see if we can get a refund on this HORRIBLE appliance.

Agreed - the AquaLift coating does nothing to help, the water in the bottom the oven is barely warm after the cleaning cycle, even 3 in a row. Still have to clean every spill by hand. Now I only use the top rack for cooking and cover the lower rack with foil to catch any spills. Also, the oven temperature is 50 degrees less than the readout so I compensate for that. The convection mode temperatures vary unpredictably. Because this oven/range was supplied by my rental company, I have no purchase claims, so I just live with it.

I built my home last November 2016 and occupied the house for 7 months. It was time to try this new Aqua Lift concept to which I initially paid more money to have this upgraded option. It's useless, a piece of junk!!! Over the past 3 days my husband has attempted to clean it 5 times with no success. He called Whirlpool customer service several times, to be told they can send out a service man for but we would be charges for the service call....what that's crazy!!1 1st to charged for a stove cleaning concept that is poorly designed, no service person can make this oven clean unless they have a magic wand. The last Whirlpool service man we had here 6 months ago for our Whirlpool dishwasher declared they make the appliance poorly and blamed the government, yes really and said we have to live with the issue. Whirlpool should get their act together ...to spend all this money on appliance and be told its the governments fault is absolutely ridiculous! I looked the other way with the dishwasher issue but I will not accept the lack of not replacing my stove with a different model that the self cleaner feature works. I will get a disease cooking in a filthy stove. How can Whirlpool get away with this false advertising feature!

I also have the same issue, not only does the aqua lift not work the design of the oven bottom makes cleaning even more difficult than a standard oven as any cleaner applied to the side wall of the oven runs down under the aqua lift pan requiring removal and clean up there too.

We have the Whirlpool in our new home . The stoves manufacturing date is a year ago. After following directions 4 times concluding there is a problem, we ran across this site. We concur. The button that says “self cleaning” is a joke. Whirlpool must not take this too seriously and yes, a class action lawsuit is in order. They must think we are fools to get on our hand and knees to clean a self cleaning oven

Same issue. I've had this Kitchen Aid range installed for less than 2 months and it needed cleaning after cooking a chicken in it. Ran the cycle twice and it did nothing. Scraping with the included scaper and sponge did nothing. Resorted to oven cleaner though wanted against and now it is clean but the coating it ruined. Seriously?! After selling a much older model that had minimal problems this is a huge disappointment! Now I have to figure out where to go from here.

I bought a whirlpool range with the aqua lift technology. I bought it because of Whirlpool's advertising the aqua lift technology. I though that would be a great way to clean an oven. Whirlpool had nothing but good reviews from people who had bought ranges with Aqua lift technology. Now I wonder if they were all false. I am in my 70's and it is very hard for me to "hand clean" an oven, but that is what I am having to do! I leave on social security and a pension so I don't have the cash to toss my Whirlpool Range out the door and go buy another one. I feel like I have been made a victim of a scam by Whirlpool. I have not read any good reviews by "real" people on this technology. Only find bad reviews!

Seemed logical when we bought it 3 years ago, I clean lots of pots and pans that way myself for years by adding water to the pan and steaming it off, however this does not work at all inside this oven. Not at all zero, zip!! Have to scrub on hands and knees and still doesn't get clean. What a rip off for sure. Have always purchased Whirlpool products in past but very disappointed with them on this one. Shame on You Whirlpool. You owe us big time !!

We thought it would be great to have the oven clean in 40 minutes instead of 3 hours and a lot of heat. Unfortunately the aqualift cleaning system does not work at all. In October 2017 I purchased an expensive Kitchenaid (made by Whirlpool) gas range. It is supposed to be self-cleaning but the aqua lift feature does not and never has cleaned up anything. I've followed the directions, used the kit, followed the video, tried up to 3 consecutive cleaning cycles, scrub my heart out and still I can't get it clean. It is worse than a manual clean oven because I can't even use a product like Easy Off oven cleaner or according to the manufacturer, I will ruin the oven. I am angry because I have a bad back and specifically asked about the self-cleaning feature and was told that although there were problems early on, they had been fixed. Not so. This is a total ripoff and I want my money back so that I can get a new range.

I purchased a Whirlpool gas range with aqualift self cleaning technology. We bought this through the Builder in our new home and it is a total piece of crap. It constantly sets off our smoke alarms because I can't get it clean. I had one small spill from meatloaf leaking and I have tried everything to get the Bottom clean. Called Whirlpool and all they suggested was that I purchase the scraper/cleaning set. Went to Best Buy where I purchased the stove. Manager would not do a thing & told me to contact Whirlpool. Deborah S. said

Bought this range about a year ago and have spent more time trying to clean it than what I actually do cooking with it. Yesterday alone I spend 5 hours scrubbing the bottom of the oven after 4 cycles. Needless to say its futile to even try to clean the sides and back ( if you can actually reach the back of the oven.) This product is a rip off and we should all be compensated with full replacement cost. Never have I been so disappointed in a product. Also, shame on the sales people who push this product knowing that it doesnt work as advertised.

Same issues as everyone else. I ended up using the old baking soda and vinegar solution, and spent HOURS cleaning, between multiple Aqua Lift cycles and elbow grease. Now I totally avoid broiling in the oven and pan-fry instead. Also, when I do use the oven, I try to use recipes where the food is covered so it does not splatter. I'm not sure if it would help to do the Aqua Lift clean every time I use the oven, which is a ridiculous solution anyway.

I'm having the same issue as everyone else. The Aqualift doesn't make steam to soften the food/grease stuck to the inside of the oven and it certainly doesn't clean the oven, in fact it makes the oven a little worse because the grease on the sides and top just gets cooked on further and you are left with two cups of lukewarm water in the bottom of your oven. You are told not to use oven cleaner as it will void the warranty and damage the finish but I've only had the oven for about 8 months and its so dirty that I'm afraid I will soon have no choice but to use a cleaner or have a disgustingly dirty oven. Complete waste of money and will never buy another oven with this feature!

We purchased a Maytag electric range with Aqua-lift technology in 2017 and were of the understanding that it was self-cleaning. This is totally incorrect and we have just spent hours trying to clean our oven after using the Aqua-lift system. We have purchased and did use the Affresh cleaner as instructed by the manufacturer and have had to literally scrub the soil off. We are completely disappointed. This is how ovens were cleaned many years ago. Previously we had a self-cleaning oven that used high heat and it worked beautifully. I believe purchasers are misled by the manufacturer into thinking that these ovens are self-cleaning which is totally incorrect.
