GM 2011 Chevrolet Traverse timing chain issue

Issue Status: Discussion

My 2011 Chevrolet Traverse received a P0008 code; which has to do with a problem with the timing chain. This is wide known problem with GM to the extent that they created a special extended warranty to handle this problem. It has been confirmed by the dealership, that my vehicle has the same engine, but for whatever reason was not included in the Special Warranty which covers vehicles to 120K miles. My vehicle has 121K miles. This is a GM problem and they know it. A car with 121K miles should not have to deal with a timing chain issue. I have contacted GM Corp as well as the local dealership and they are not willing to do anything for me. I believe they should be held accountable for their problem.

i had this same issue at 86,000 miles. after chain was fixed it ran great until the motor blew up the other day with only 93000 miles with no warning. oil has been changed every 3000 miles! these motors are junk and need to have some kind of reimbursement towards the money iv put into it.

I am a female car dealer and have been for years since my husband got hurt at work. I recently purchased a 2011 Chevrolet Traverse. While driving it home the engine light came on. Had it checked and it was a PO008 code which is a timing chain code. Took it to the local Chevrolet dealer for them to check out all they did was put the vin in to see if there was a recall or extended warranty on it. I was told it does not. The Traverse only has 102k miles on it. The warranty on these were extended to 120k miles but still not fix. Really hung out by Chevrolet and won't buy anymore. I also have a 2008 crew cab silverado as a personal driver and got a recall on the air bags in July 2016 and I keep getting the run around about it. The local dealer says there is no fix. Once again hung out by chevrolet. They are getting good at stealing money from all of us poor working class.

I have a 2009 Chevy Traverse. We have had every single recall that GM has had including a new transmission at 60,000 miles, a new water pump, power steering pump, replaced catalytic converter, and now....wait for it....we are replacing our timing chain for the 3RD TIME in 46,000 miles. Only now, we are 5,000 miles outside our 120,000 mile warranty and GM has refused to cover it because they claim it is due to not maintain proper maintenance on our vehicle even after supplying them with records of 5 oil changes in 2.5 years and 27,000 miles. Again, this is our 3rd time getting timing chain replaced and now we are on the hook for it. I’m not backing down on this until our dealer or GM has made this right!!!!

I also have a 2011 Chevrolet Traverse. 159k miles and the code is reading there is a problem with the timing chain. I have been in communication with GM and took it to the dealership where I was told they would have to take the engine apart to diagnose and I would be required to pay for that. It seems this is a major issue with these cars and GM needs to do something to address it.

We also have a 2011 Traverse with only 82K miles and the timing changed failed. This is 2mths after replacing water pump, alternator battery and crank shaft sensor after a power failure. The dealer also reset the oil change parameters on the vehicle a year ago but GM says the vin is not part of the extended warranty. I have read hundreds of complaints for same issues. I have an open case with GM but to date they are refusing to accept responsibility for their defective Workman ship. Is it time for a class action lawsuit?

My mom is 75 and still paying on her 2011 traverse. Code p008. Still running strong but is told she needs $3000 to fix timing chain. Still owes 10 grand.. can't retire as to has to keep paying high payments and now save for timing chain fix. Was told when she bought it. No recalls or issues from dealership. I call bull. They need to own up to all these complaints.

I have 65k on my 2011 traverse and was driving up the highway and the vehicle shut off while i was driving. Had it towed to a garage and they said the timing chain came off and ruined the engine. It will only cost around $5600 to replace, like I have that in my pocket while I still owe $13000 on it. Then I get an the internet and see hundreds of posts from people with the same problem. This will probably ruin my credit cause I don't see how to continue to pay for it and fix it too.

2012 Equinox timing chain and gears and guides as well as tensioner. Motor started rough idling skipping on cold start etc . Now I’m reading that this is common to the 2.4 Ecotec motor . This should be a recall and GM should make good of this inferior workmanship. It’s a thousand dollars for this fix !!!

Same issue 2011 Chevy traverse, my dealer, kept telling me they couldn't diagnose my vehicle, then a year later once I was out of warranty they, told me the timing issues would be bad enough that it may be cheaper to change the whole engine. I'm getting by now by changing out sensors as they fail and sticking close to home in the winter, but fo GM to put vehicles on the road with known problems like this is rediculous.

I have a 2011 Chevy Traverse with only 91,000 miles timing chain issues had to fix it which should have been covered under warranty. Not very happy, GM needs to stand behind this issue. If they are a truly a great company they will reimburse at least some of the cost.

Yes!! I have a 2010 traverse and I'm having the same issue with my timing chain. I can't afford $3000.00 right now to have it fixed Not to mention all the other recalls that have gone along with owning a traverse. I've already been through the water pump and power steering fiasco where they cover some and I pay the other $1×××.×× also the lift gate that fell on my head because it stoped working and was recalled. I HATE the traverse and can say I will NEVER own a chevy again after going through all this. Very disappointed with Chevy.

I'm a single mother of 4 broke down on the side of the road right now as I type this message for HELP! It's now my timing belt this time along with a list of other things going wrong with my 2011 chevy traverse. I've called about recalls over & over & of course same response my VIN# isn't the right one.... Well I'm not a rocket scientist or a master mechanic but I do know this much my VIN# needs added to that recall list bc I've never had this many problems out of a vehicle & I'm still paying on mine & this is definitely not my problem to fix it's GM's problem & they need to honor their vehicle defect problems! This is horrible & not right to do to their customers....

Also having the same problem with my 2011 Chevy traverse. Running fine but check engine light is on and it needs to be inspected. I've been to 3 shops now and they all say the same thing timing chain code so they won't pass my NYS inspection . I have had this since it was brand new 2011 I just hit 102 thousand miles! I'm so very frustrated at this point I paid alot of money for this truck and should not be putting a $3000 thousand dollar repair in at 100 thousand miles !!! My truck has been well maintained! Shame on you Chevy ... I've been driving Chevy my whole life but this has really made me consider never buying another Chevy !

We own a 2011 Traverse, last Dec we spent over $3k on a timing chain and other repairs associated with that, this past month another timing chain and a catalytic converter, and additional $3k. Yes all maintenance kept up - reg oil changes and such. Not to mention issues with false sensors, heating and air conditioner issues. Absolutely ridiculous that Chevy doesn’t take responsibility for their poor product.
I’d love to show up on set to one of those Chevy “real people” commercials and give a “real” review of their Traverse line!

Same problem here with 2010 Traverse. P0008, p0017. Had timing chains replaced Nov 2016 and now Feb 2019 with less than 20,000 miles since replacement the timing chains are bad again. I've done my research and found the problem. This ongoing problem is a design flaw on bank 1 pcv valve and oil ports that lubricate the chain, the holes for both the pcv valve that provides venting for the oil ports to allow oil to get to the chain are both too small and get clogged up with oil gunk and blocks the oil flow to the chain which causes the tensioner glides to wear and the timing chain to over heat and stretch. Look up on youtube "the real problem with vvt 3.6 timing chains".

We bought a 2012 Chevy Traverse August of 2016 with 77,000 miles. From the day we bought it, we kept up with proper maintenance. Every light we had checked out to be told there was no issue. The car would not start at times and others it would drop in speed and all the lights would go on. The safety of our family was on the line. We had everything checked out. Chevy told us they have no such issues with the Traverse. With 86,000 miles on October 31, 2016, the engine dies. Timing chains snap. We fought to get it fixed for a year with no luck. My family with 6 kids was without a car for over a year. Finally, we stopped making payments for a car we couldn't afford to fix. It was financed for $20,000.00. We were left with bad credit and debit with no vehicle. We were constantly in contact with GM and Chevy headquarters to be told there are no issues with the traverse. I have all of the documentation.
