Academy of Court Reporting - Delta Career Education Corp. Settles Student Class Action
Academy of Court Reporting Inc., a school for training court reporters agreed to pay $7.8 million to settle claims that it defrauded thousands of students by misrepresenting the services offered by the school.
The complaint alleged that the Academy duped consumers into enrolling into programs for court reporting and other law-related vocations by representing that it would confer upon them associates degrees, when in fact Academy had no authority to confer such degrees. The plaintiffs further claim that the defendants misrepresented to them graduation and job placement rates and salary figures.
The $7.8 million settlement fund is to be divided among the class members equally. In addition, any student who left the Academy before completing the program will receive tuition discounts up to $2,000 to complete the program.
Also students who have graduated from the Academy's two-year program may pursue a bachelor's degree at Miller-Motte College in North Carolina, a four-year college operated by defendant Delta Career Education Corp., and receive credit for two full years of college and enroll as juniors. The agreement provides that any class members who choose to enroll at Miller-Motte College as juniors will receive a 25 percent discount on their tuition for the remaining two years.
