Savannah-Chatham County school district settles employment class action

The Savannah-Chatham County school district has settled a class-action lawsuit by employees who say they were not allowed to enroll in the state retirement system for educators.

The district has agreed to pay $4.2 million to the more than 200 school maintenance, lunchroom, transportation and warehouse workers who filed the suit. Any of the workers still employed by the district will now be able to sign up for the Teachers Retirement System of Georgia.

The lawsuit was filed in 2004 by a school mechanic who says he was denied enrollment in the retirement system.
