Verizon and Alltel refund millions for Florida consumers

Verizon and Alltel have agreed to refund millions to Florida cell phone customers billed for unwanted third-party services including ringtones, music and horoscopes.

The charges can mysteriously appear on bills with indiscernible names.

Attorney General Bill McCollum announced Wednesday that his office settled with the companies. Verizon is acquiring Alltel. McCollum didn't specify the size of the refund.

The companies also are taking steps to prevent such practices in the future and will pay the state $1.5 million to cover the investigation and efforts to seek similar reform across the industry.
